HPC4L Governance

A consortium has been setup to design, construct and operate the HPC4L facility. Each member of the consortium has specific responsibilities that have been assigned to ensure the sustainability of the project. The table below offers a snapshot of HPC4L members’ contributions.

Public Institution Roles

  • Provide IT Infrastructure (Fibre, WIFI)
  • Provide local and global network connection
  • Provide Power Infrastructure (UPS, generator, electricity)
  • Purchase of racks, and AC
  • Security
  • Technical Maintenance
  • Training of students in facility management
  • Provide Infrastructure development and maintenance

Private Institution Roles

  • Installation of computers and storage disks
  • 24/7 system adminnistration
  • Cluster management and user support
  • On call technical support 
  • Contributions to the common fund 

Today 4 public institutions and 5 private ones are being represented at the HPC4L Steering Committee. CERN and CMS are also part of the consortium but will only remain in an advisory capacity once the Supercomputer is operational.

American University of Beirut

Founded in 1866, the American University of Beirut is a teaching-centered research university based on the American liberal arts model of higher education. AUB has over 8,000 students and 800 faculty members. The University encourages freedom of thought and expression and seeks to graduate men and women committed to creative and critical thinking, lifelong learning, personal integrity, civic responsibility, and leadership.

 


Lebanese American University

LAU

The Lebanese American University is a leading, nonsectarian, private higher education institution in Lebanon. It operates under a charter from the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York and is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. In the fall 2020 semester, LAU enrolled more than 8,500 students.

 


Lebanese University

The Lebanese University is the only public institution for higher education in Lebanon. Established in 1951, the university today has 16 faculties and serves all cultural, religious, and social groups of students and teachers. With 80,874 students (2018-2019) it is at the heart of the whole educational system in Lebanon.

 


Saint Joseph University

Saint-Joseph University (USJ) is a private Lebanese university that was established in 1875. It promotes excellence and aims to mold its students into the best of the country and region, thereby opening wide the doors of opportunity for them. Not only that, but it also seeks to promote dialogue through biculturalism and plurilingualism, all while remaining a safe haven for reflection and character building.


Beirut Arab University (BAU)

Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK)

Unique among universities in Lebanon, USEK was the first university to be established by Lebanese citizens, this case by the Lebanese Maronite Order (OLM) monks, who have been placing their values in education since the 17th century. The educational programs and research development we offer all our students are in line with the official requirements of the Lebanese state, the Constitutions of the OLM and the social teaching of the Catholic Church on universities, and, more recently, with the American-style education system and international accreditations to give our students wider prospects abroad as well as in Lebanon.

OGERO, engine of MoT, constitutes the backbone infrastructure for all telecom networks including Mobile Operators, Data Service Providers (DSPs), Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and others. Ogero continues to improve and expand its portfolio of services including Voice and Data services mainly based on Fiber (FTTx).


Conseil National De La Recherche Scientifique (CNRS)

Since its establishment in 1962, the National Council for Scientific Research – Lebanon (CNRS-L) is serving the scientific community in Lebanon covering all scientific disciplines. Its main objective is to encourage scientific research and support human resources development along the general scientific policies adopted by the government. 


The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS)

The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is a general-purpose detector at the Large Hadron Collider. CMS produces a huge amount of data that must be analysed, more than five petabytes per year when running at peak performance. CMS establishes HPC facilities with the help of experts from IN2P3 who will provide the proper training and skills required to run these facilities.


Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire (CERN)

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the world's largest and and most respected centers for scientific research. Its business is fundamental physics, finding out what the Universe is made of and how it works. CERN donates hardware sources to various countries and institutions. Recently, CERN have donated more the 3000 cores for the establishment of a High Performance Facility in Lebanon.

The Ministry of Telecommunications handles all the Lebanese Government’s telecom related Services. It is responsible for designing rules and regulations in the sector. It is headed by minister of telecommunication. The ministry has the responsibility to construct and maintain all the telecommunication Services in Country that include fixed, mobile and Internet Services. The Ministry of Telecommunications also defines appropriate fees to smoothly carry out these Services.
